GITANO
Health:
Suffers from colic’s that seem to be stress related. He was diagnosed crystals in his urine, which also contributes to stomach pains / colic’s. Has improved over the years. Been unsound 2 on the same back leg.
Personality:
Riding: Lazy, and needs a push to get going. Bomb proof and 99% trust worthy with smaller kids on his back, and we use him a lot with them to practise turning / stopping as he is easy in the walk + trot when he help moving him on. Kicks out and does small jumps on the spot or slams on breaks when using the stick to try to avoid work but once pushed on and ignored stops this. With an experienced rider he listens well and moves forward, but does not get hot - only when playing games you see Shaggy get excited from time to time!
Box: Unfortunately, due to this traumatic experience, he does not like being inside the stables, and will clearly show anyone unsure of him it, by biting. Therefore he wears a muzzle when groomed, or when many people circulate inside the barn.
Info: Shaggy was bought down the road from us. He had been locked up his whole life, and only been out of his box a few times. He had no muscles what so ever, and we spent almost one year to get him in shape, teach him to be a normal horse. Still today he likes to wander off on his own, and does not have a ‘friend’. It was impossible to keep him locked up; he would escape from anywhere, jump over or crawl under! So you won’t see Shaggy ever in a paddock, but out or in the box.
Disciplines:
Dressage: Not very flexible but can do the basic moves, even though a bit difficult to get to respond.
Jumping: Improving, jumps comfortably up to 70 cm, but can jump 80-90 cm. Not the smoothest but once he gets going seldom stops
.
Out rides: 99% Bomb proof. He is not faced by anything and therefore a great horse to put any nervous / in experienced rider on.
Gymkhanas: Extremely bomb proof and therefore an excellent horse for gymkhana’s.
Likes: To wander around on his own. Be outside loose. Play games.
Dislikes: Being inside! Fears water on the ground where he cannot see the bottom of it, puddles fine.
